Salini Impregilo on shortlist for €1.5B Sydney gateway megaproject in Australia

PRESS NOTES

MILAN, November 11, 2019 – Salini Impregilo is on the shortlist for Sydney Gateway, a AU$2.2-$2.6 billion (€1.5 billion) project to improve road connections from Sydney Airport and Port Botany to the new Sydney motorway network at St Peters Interchange.

The project will complete missing links in the motorway network and return local streets to the community by enabling around 80,000 vehicles a day (including 10,000 heavy vehicles), to travel on new roads. The project will include a new flyover to the Domestic terminals at Sydney Airport.

Transport for NSW (of the New South Wales Government) is handling the bidding process, part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure in a state whose population is expected to grow from eight million to 12 million by 2056.

Australia is at the forefront of innovative and sustainable infrastructure, working with a variety of players including Salini Impregilo to meet the demands of its growing population. The country, which ranks among the world’s biggest investors in infrastructure, is an important market for the Group, whose expertise in sectors like water and transport has seen it win important projects. This expertise is set to sharpen as the Group pursues Progetto Italia, a plan to consolidate Italy’s fragmented construction industry and create a bigger group with the best talent and resources the industry has to offer.

In Australia, Salini Impregilo won earlier this year a contract to build Snowy 2.0, the biggest hydropower station in the country. The Group is in the midst of building the Forrestfield-Airport Link, a metro line that will connect Perth’s eastern suburbs with the airport and the Central Business District. In Sydney, it contributed to the construction of the Sydney Metro Northwest, the skytrain bridge and viaduct in particular. The project was the biggest in public transport since the construction of the Harbour Bridge about a century ago.
